Azerbaijan, Germany discuss bilateral relations, regional peace efforts During COP29 conference

22 November 2024 16:48

Azerbaijan's Foreign Minister, Jeyhun Bayramov, held talks on a range of key issues with his German counterpart, Annalena Baerbock, during her working visit to Azerbaijan for COP29.

The talks, held on the sidelines of COP29, focused on both bilateral and multilateral agendas, including ongoing negotiations related to the climate summit, Caliber.Az reports per Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The ministers also addressed the post-conflict situation in the region, with particular emphasis on the current state of the Azerbaijan-Armenia normalisation process.

They reviewed the existing challenges to the peace efforts and the steps needed to ensure stability moving forward.

Minister Bayramov raised concerns about a coordinated and unfounded smear campaign against Azerbaijan, highlighting his country’s position and stressing the need for fair and unbiased discussions in the international community.

Note that, at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) in Baku, Baerbock underscored the critical link between climate financing and carbon emission reduction.

Baerbock stressed that effective climate financing cannot be achieved without substantial cuts to carbon emissions, warning that the financial resources required for addressing climate damage will only increase as global temperatures rise. She highlighted that every fraction of a degree of warming escalates the cost of damage, making urgent emission reduction necessary to mitigate these impacts.

The minister also outlined that COP29 would focus primarily on financing solutions to the climate crisis, with particular attention to adaptation measures, losses, and damages that must be addressed by 2035.

Baerbock reiterated the importance of international cooperation in tackling these challenges, with the European delegation aiming to build upon progress made at the previous COP in Dubai to enhance climate financing efforts.
