Azerbaijan highlights green economy preparations at UN forum in Geneva

03 April 2025 19:56

Azerbaijan’s commitment to sustainable development and green economy initiatives was showcased at the 2025 UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Regional Forum on Sustainable Development (RFSD), held in Geneva.

The forum, centered around the theme “Fair digital and green transition for all”, provided a platform for discussing global efforts in achieving environmental sustainability and digital transformation, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

Representing Azerbaijan at the event, Vali Guliyev, Chief of the State Labor Inspection Service, delivered a key speech highlighting the country’s reforms aimed at aligning labour legislation with international standards. Guliyev discussed ongoing efforts to digitize the social sphere and introduce innovative solutions to state control systems that ensure compliance with labour standards.

A significant focus of Guliyev’s address was the introduction of Azerbaijan’s e-sosial portal and the “Labour and Employment” subsystem, which are central to improving access to services and information for both workers and employers. He also emphasized programs designed to support vulnerable groups in the labour market, ensuring that no one is left behind in the country’s progress toward a green economy.

Further demonstrating Azerbaijan’s commitment to sustainable development, Guliyev mentioned the country’s active initiatives in training its workforce to meet the evolving demands of the green economy. This is in line with the government’s broader efforts to modernize employment and social protection systems in the face of emerging environmental and digital challenges.

Azerbaijan’s participation in the forum also underscored its adherence to international labour standards, with the country having ratified 59 conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO). Additionally, Guliyev noted that the republic’s tripartite commission on social and economic issues plays a pivotal role in fostering an inclusive and resilient labour market.

The forum’s discussions encompassed a range of topics, including labour market transformation, the modernisation of employment systems, and the adaptation of social protection mechanisms to address the twin challenges of digital and environmental transitions.
