On July 15, 2016, Türkiye experienced a dramatic attempted coup d'état against the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The coup attempt, widely attributed to members of the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ), sought to overthrow the democratically elected government and seize control of key institutions, including the presidential palace and major media outlets.
During the coup attempt, tanks were deployed on the streets of Ankara and Istanbul, bridges were blocked, and the Turkish parliament was bombed. Thousands of Turkish citizens took to the streets in defiance of the coup plotters, resulting in violent clashes and casualties.
The events of July 15, 2016, have deeply influenced Turkish politics, society, and international relations, shaping ongoing debates on democracy, security, and the role of religious movements in Turkish governance.
