23 October 2024 14:15

Azerbaijan and Iran have discussed joint projects as part of the energy cooperation.

These discussions were held during the talks between the energy ministers of the two countries, Parviz Shahbazov and Abbas Aliabadi, in China, where the 3rd Belt and Road Energy Ministers Conference is being held, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

The sides emphasised the importance of accelerating the construction of hydroelectric power stations at the “Khudaferin,” “GizGalasi,” and “Ordubad” hydro junctions.

The meeting also addressed the coordination of electrical grids among Azerbaijan, Iran, and Russia, as well as the expansion of collaboration on electricity exchange and transit.

Shahbazov also met with Zhang Jianhua, head of the National Energy Administration of China, during the conference.

The meeting highlighted that the memorandum of understanding on energy signed between the two agencies encompasses all areas of this sector.

The participation of China Energy Overseas Investment company in the 160 MW solar power plant project, as well as the engagement of Chinese companies, including PowerChina Huadong Engineering Co., Ltd., in the implementation of wind and solar energy projects, was praised. The agenda for COP29 and China's active involvement in the event were also discussed.

“We had a fruitful meeting on joint projects on the agenda of our energy cooperation with Abbas Aliabadi, Minister of Energy of Iran in China. We discussed the matters arising from the implementation of the Khudaferin and GizGalasi HPP, Ordubad HPP, coordination of electricity networks of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia, the cooperation opportunities within the electricity export and the establishment of regional electricity relations,” Shahbazov wrote on X.

The third high-level forum on international cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative was inaugurated in Beijing, where Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasised the fundamental principles of high-quality collaboration within the initiative.

Representatives from over 110 countries attended the forum, which included various sessions such as an opening ceremony and three high-level discussions centred on connectivity, sustainable development, and the digital economy.

The "Belt and Road Initiative," originally proposed by Xi Jinping in 2013, merges the "Economic Silk Road" with the "21st Century Maritime Silk Road." According to official Chinese statistics, this initiative covers a vast area of Eurasia, connecting both developing and developed nations.
