Azerbaijan, Iran to open fifth border checkpoint, ambassador says
A fifth border crossing between Azerbaijan and Iran is expected to open in the coming months, Iranian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Mojtaba Demirchilou announced during his visit to Nakhchivan.
The ambassador noted that four checkpoints currently operate along the Azerbaijan–Iran border — Astara, Bilasuvar, Julfa, and Shahtakhti–Poldasht, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
“The opening of the fifth checkpoint is linked to the construction of a new bridge in the Aghband–Kalala region. Work on the project is expected to be completed by the end of this December, and preparations for the new checkpoint are already underway,” Demirchilou stated.
He emphasized that the launch of the new bridge and checkpoint will open fresh opportunities to expand economic cooperation between Azerbaijan and Iran. The project will also enhance transport connectivity between Nakhchivan and other regions of Azerbaijan, strengthening regional integration and cross-border trade.
