During an official visit to Tokyo, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov held talks with members of the Japan-Azerbaijan Parliamentary Friendship League, focusing on strengthening political, economic, and inter-parliamentary ties between the two countries.
According to Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the discussions included an exchange of views on the current state and future prospects of bilateral relations, with both sides highlighting the importance of political consultation mechanisms and the role of the Economic Cooperation Commission, Caliber.Az reports.
The parties also underscored the significance of mutual high-level visits and regular contacts in further deepening cooperation. It was noted that Japan was among the first countries to recognise Azerbaijan’s independence.
Emphasis was placed on inter-parliamentary cooperation, including the working group within Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis and the Japan-Azerbaijan Friendship League in the Japanese parliament.
The discussions covered cooperation across multiple sectors, including politics, energy, trade, tourism, education, and humanitarian affairs. Azerbaijani officials highlighted the role of major Japanese companies such as Itochu and Inpex in Azerbaijan’s energy sector, particularly in oil and gas projects.
Bayramov also briefed his counterparts on the history of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, post-conflict developments, ongoing normalisation efforts, reconstruction work in recently regained territories, and measures addressing the mine threat.
The meeting further included discussions on regional and international developments of mutual interest, including the situation in the Middle East.
