27 October 2025 20:49

Azerbaijan and Kenya are strengthening ties in the penitentiary sector, as a high-level Azerbaijani delegation visited Nairobi to discuss prison reform, staff training, and innovative technologies in correctional services.

The delegation, led by Deputy Minister of Justice and Head of the Penitentiary Service Mirsaleh Seyidov, participated in Correctional Services Week in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

Seyidov served as the guest of honour at the opening ceremony and contributed to panel discussions and working sessions focused on the modernisation of penitentiary systems, including the application of digital technologies and artificial intelligence.

During the visit, the Azerbaijani delegation met with Kenyan Interior Ministry Secretary General Salome M. Beacco to explore collaboration in areas such as staff training, prisoner resocialisation and reintegration programs, and the exchange of professional experience.

In addition to Kenya, meetings were held with the deputy ministers responsible for prison services from Sierra Leone and Eswatini. Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Kenya, Sultan Hajiyev, also took part in the discussions.

The delegation toured Nairobi West Prison, gaining firsthand insight into detention conditions.
