Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan reinforce environmental ties for Central Asia's climate resilience COP16 in Colombia

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, COP29 President-designate Mukhtar Babayev, has met with Kyrgyzstan's Special Representative for the Environment Dinara Amanturovna within the framework of his visit to Colombia to participate in the 16th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16).

“On the margins of COP16 in Colombia, COP29 President-designate held an important meeting with Dinara Amanturovna, Special Representative of Kyrgyzstan on Environmental Issues,” Caliber.Az reports, citing the COP29 Operating Company.

The parties emphasised that strengthening ties to ensure climate resilience in Central Asia remains a shared commitment.

Notably, the 2024 United Nations Biodiversity Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity is a conference that is currently being held from October 21 to November 1, 2024 in Cali, Colombia. 

Hosting COP16 in Colombia emphasizes the strategic importance and natural wealth of the country. With more than 67,000 species of plants and animals, Colombia is the third most biodiverse country in the world.

The theme of COP16 is "Peace with Nature." The primary goal of this conference is to review the progress made in implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework, also known as the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

COP16 is a crucial opportunity to accelerate global action on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. It will bring together governments, businesses, civil society organizations, and indigenous peoples to work together to protect our planet's biodiversity.
