Azerbaijan marks 30th anniversary of diplomatic ties with Antigua and Barbuda

05 April 2025 13:24

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has extended its congratulations to Antigua and Barbuda on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The congratulatory message was shared on the Ministry's official social media page on platform X, Caliber.Az reports.

"Congratulations to Antigua & Barbuda on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our countries! 🇦🇿🇦🇬 On this memorable day, we present our best wishes to the Government and People of Antigua & Barbuda!" the statement reads.

During its tenure as Chair of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), Azerbaijan demonstrated strong leadership in advocating for the interests and concerns of Small Island Developing States (SIDS), including Antigua and Barbuda. Under Azerbaijan’s chairmanship, the NAM focused on advancing the institutional development of the Movement, strengthening its unity, and enhancing its global visibility.

Azerbaijan's leadership provided a unique opportunity to address the specific challenges faced by SIDS. The country actively promoted global efforts to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, initiating the UN Special Session and advocating for equitable vaccine distribution. Azerbaijan also extended financial and humanitarian assistance to over 80 countries, including around 20 SIDS, during the pandemic.

Azerbaijan’s commitment to SIDS was further demonstrated through its leadership in promoting post-pandemic recovery. In March 2024, Azerbaijan launched a Global Call to Action to support the socio-economic recovery of SIDS, inviting the international community to provide targeted financial and economic aid. Azerbaijan was the first country to allocate funds in response to this call.

As the host of COP29, Azerbaijan remains steadfast in its commitment to amplifying the voices of small island developing states (SIDS), including Antigua and Barbuda, in addressing the climate challenges they face. Focused on fostering solidarity and promoting sustainable development, Azerbaijan continues to offer practical support to SIDS, including financial aid for disaster recovery and educational opportunities for nationals of these countries.
