Azerbaijan, Northern Cyprus deepen strategic parliamentary ties

Speaker of Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis (Parliament) Sahiba Gafarova has met with Ziya Öztürkler, Speaker of the Assembly of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), during his visit to Azerbaijan to attend the 20th Session of the Conference of the Parliamentary Union of the OIC Member States.

The meeting focused on enhancing parliamentary cooperation and discussing issues of mutual interest, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

The sides emphasized the importance of the Parliamentary Union as an effective platform for deepening relations among the legislative bodies of member states and addressing key issues facing the Islamic world. They also noted the high level of organization of the conference held in Azerbaijan.

During the discussions, Gafarova and Öztürkler exchanged views on the current state of interparliamentary relations. Gafarova highlighted the role of regular contacts, reciprocal visits, and meetings between parliamentary speakers and lawmakers in strengthening cooperation and expanding ties between legislatures.

The participants also pointed out the significance of collaboration among parliamentary friendship groups. In particular, they welcomed the trilateral meetings involving the friendship groups of the Milli Majlis of Azerbaijan, the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, and the Assembly of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, describing the initiative as an important step toward closer parliamentary engagement.

The meeting also highlighted Azerbaijan's continued support for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. Öztürkler expressed his appreciation for Azerbaijan's consistent backing and commended the country for its support.

The sides further exchanged views on a range of other issues of mutual interest, reaffirming their commitment to strengthening cooperation between their respective legislative institutions.
