Azerbaijan prepares for COP29: Diplomatic meeting with UNOPS leadership
Elshad Iskenderov, Ambassador-at-Large of the Azerbaijani Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held a meeting with Jorge Moreira da Silva, Executive Director of the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
Moreira da Silva shared details of the meeting on his social network X page, Caliber.Az reports.
“It was a pleasure to welcome Ambassador Elshad Iskenderov to the UNOPS office in New York as Azerbaijan prepares to assume the COP29 Chairmanship. We look forward to contributing practical solutions to the critical decisions that will shape climate action at this pivotal moment,” the post stated.
Prior to this, Ambassador Iskenderov participated in a high-level roundtable on "Climate, Peace, and Human Mobility," organized by Azerbaijan's COP29 Presidency at the UN Headquarters in New York during the UN General Assembly's High-Level Week.
Azerbaijan is set to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) this November. This decision was confirmed during COP28 in Dubai on December 11, 2023. Over a two-week period, Baku will welcome approximately 70,000 to 80,000 international visitors.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), established during the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent harmful human impact on the climate system. COP, or the "Conference of the Parties," is the Convention's highest decision-making body, overseeing its implementation. The UNFCCC has 198 member states, and COP sessions are generally held annually, with the first session having taken place in Berlin in 1995. The COP secretariat is located in Bonn.
