Azerbaijan Railways boosts capacity to handle 1,000 block trains annually
The volume of cargo transported from China via the Middle Corridor increased more than 25 times in 2024 compared to 2023, exceeding 27,000 containers, according to Azerbaijan Railways CJSC.
The company highlighted, that the development of Azerbaijan's infrastructure enables the transportation of at least 1,000 block trains annually, Caliber.Az reports citing Azerbaijan Railways.
“The modernization of our infrastructure has significantly enhanced our capacity, ensuring that we can efficiently handle growing transit volumes,” the company stated.
A key milestone in 2024 was the arrival of the first container train from Xi’an, China, to Baku in just 11 days in March. In November, Azerbaijan marked another historic achievement by dispatching its first freight train to China, opening new opportunities for local businesses.
The upgrade of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway line in 2024 also played a pivotal role, boosting its capacity from 1 million tonnes to 5 million tonnes per year.
The Middle Corridor remains a strategically vital route linking East and West, and its potential continues to expand.
