Azerbaijan reaffirms commitment to ending colonialism in speech at UN committee
Azerbaijan continues to play an active role in international discussions on decolonisation, Azerbaijani Permanent Representative to the United Nations Tofig Musayev said in his address to the Special Political and Decolonisation Committee of the UN General Assembly.
Musayev emphasised that during Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the Non-Aligned Movement between 2019 and 2023, the country made the fight against colonialism a priority, according to local media.
He noted that Baku worked to amplify the collective voice of the Movement in advocating the urgency of completing the decolonisation process.
“Azerbaijan has consistently called for the full implementation of the principles set out in the UN Charter and in the relevant General Assembly resolutions on decolonisation,” the envoy stated.
He added that Azerbaijan has actively engaged in regional events dedicated to this cause.
“In 2024 and earlier this year, Azerbaijan took part in the regional seminars organised by the Special Committee on the Situation with regard to the Implementation of the Declaration on the Granting of Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples, which were held in Caracas and Dili, respectively,” Musayev noted.
