Azerbaijan’s delegation participates in IMO marine protection session
A delegation from Azerbaijan’s State Maritime and Port Agency, operating under the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport, took part in the 2nd extraordinary session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), held recently in London.
The Azerbaijani delegation was represented by Habil Abbasov, Advisor to the Chairman of the Agency’s Board, and Farid Murtuzov, Senior Specialist of the Marine Environment Protection Department, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
The session focused on reviewing proposed amendments to Annex 6 of the 1973 International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL), discussions on the IMO’s Net Zero Framework, as well as examining reports and work plans of various working groups. Several key decisions were adopted during the meeting.
Notably, member states agreed to postpone the adoption of the Net Zero Framework by one year, providing additional time for further consultation and consensus-building among countries.
Highlighting the importance of the session, Habil Abbasov stressed that the committee’s decisions are crucial for advancing efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping. He described the decision to delay the framework’s adoption as a strategic move, allowing for more detailed refinement of the draft framework.
