Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States, passed away at the age of 100, as confirmed by his son, James E. Carter III, on December 29, 2024.
Carter, known for his straightforward demeanour and steadfast determination, served as president from 1977 to 1981. After losing his re-election bid to Ronald Reagan, he dedicated his post-presidency years to humanitarian causes, earning the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
He died at his home in Plains, Georgia, following prolonged health struggles, including an aggressive form of melanoma that had spread to his liver and brain.
Carter’s death occurred a little over a year after the passing of his wife, Rosalynn, on November 19, 2023. The couple had been married for 77 years, making theirs the longest presidential marriage in US history. Rosalynn played a vital role in Carter’s political life, supporting his campaigns and initiatives.
Despite facing domestic challenges during his presidency, such as the Iran hostage crisis and an energy crisis, Carter left a lasting mark with his diplomatic achievements. His most notable success was brokering the Camp David Accords between Israel and Egypt in 1978, which remains a cornerstone of his legacy.
Although Carter lost the 1980 election in a landslide, his later years cemented his reputation as a global advocate for peace and human rights. His humanitarian work earned him widespread admiration.
Carter, the oldest living US president in history, left behind a legacy of integrity, public service, and compassion. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and his life’s work will continue to inspire future generations.
