Azerbaijan’s envoy holds talks in Sri Lanka on boosting partnership photo

05 February 2026 10:45

Azerbaijan’s non-resident ambassador to Sri Lanka, Elchin Huseynli, visited Colombo to take part in celebrations marking the country’s national holiday — Independence Day.

The embassy told domestic media that the ambassador attended a military parade and an official reception, and also held meetings with Sri Lanka’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Overseas Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, Deputy Foreign Minister Arun Hemachandra, Foreign Ministry Secretary Aruni Ranaraja, and other officials.

During the meetings, both sides expressed interest in further strengthening bilateral cooperation between Azerbaijan and Sri Lanka in political, trade and economic, energy, tourism, education, and other areas.

The importance of boosting cooperation and exchanges in multilateral formats was emphasised, particularly during Azerbaijan’s chairmanship of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), as well as in the context of hosting the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13), which will be held in Baku from May 17 to 22, 2026.

The parties also expressed deep gratitude to the leadership and people of Azerbaijan for providing Sri Lankan citizens with opportunities to participate in Azerbaijan’s state educational scholarship programs, as well as for the humanitarian assistance extended during the country’s recent natural disaster.
