Azerbaijan's Independence Restoration Day celebrated in New York PHOTO

On October 18, the Azerbaijani tricolour was proudly raised in New York to commemorate the 33rd anniversary of Azerbaijan’s independence restoration.

The State Flag of Azerbaijan was displayed in Bowling Green Park, located on Wall Street, a popular tourist destination and the financial hub of New York, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

The initiative was led by Zamina Mirhadiyeva, Vice President of the New York Azerbaijanis Association. The ceremony was attended by Azerbaijan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Yashar Aliyev, along with Azerbaijani expatriates and diaspora activists residing in New York.

The flag will remain flying in the park for ten days. Notably, in previous years, the Azerbaijani tricolour has illuminated New York's skyline on significant dates for the country.

October 18 marks a pivotal date in Azerbaijan's history. This holiday signifies the revival of Azerbaijani statehood and reflects on the country's remarkable journey over the past decades.

On this day in 1991, Azerbaijan's Supreme Council adopted the Constitutional Act “On the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan.” This landmark document established Azerbaijan as the legal successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, restoring the country's independence.

The act draws from the historical foundations of Azerbaijani statehood, including the Declaration of Independence from May 28, 1918, and the August 30, 1991 declaration by the Supreme Council on restoring state independence. Importantly, this Constitutional Act affirmed Azerbaijan's status as the rightful successor of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic.

Over the past 32 years of independence, Azerbaijan has navigated a complex and transformative journey, strengthening its position on the international stage and emerging as a key player in regional and global energy security.
