Azerbaijan's Lachin Airport granted international status Decree by Prime Minister Asadov
Lachin Airport has been granted international status by a decree signed by Prime Minister Ali Asadov.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has been instructed to inform international organisations accordingly, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Azerbaijani Cabinet.
The decree comes into effect from the date of signing.
Lachin International Airport, situated near Gorchu village in Azerbaijan's Lachin district, is a strategic infrastructure project initiated in 2021 and slated for completion in 2025. Positioned at an altitude of approximately 1,800 meters, it will be the highest airport in Azerbaijan and among the highest in the post-Soviet region.
The airport features a 3,000-meter-long, 60-meter-wide runway capable of accommodating all aircraft types, including large cargo planes. Its 5,000-square-meter terminal is designed to handle 200 passengers per hour, adhering to international aviation standards.
Strategically located approximately 30 km from Lachin city, 60 km from Kalbajar, and 70 km from Shusha, the airport is poised to enhance regional connectivity. It aims to stimulate socio-economic development, boost tourism, and facilitate the return of displaced populations to the liberated territories.
In April 2024, Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) partnered with Germany's DFS Aviation Services to equip the airport with the advanced PHOENIX air traffic control system, enhancing operational efficiency and safety. Additionally, a training centre for air traffic controllers is being established in collaboration with the National Aviation Academy.
