Azerbaijan’s parliament granted observer status in Mediterranean assembly

27 January 2026 17:52

The Milli Majlis, Azerbaijan’s national parliament, has been granted observer status in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM).

The development was discussed during a meeting between Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova and PAM President Giulio Centemero, following the approval of Azerbaijan’s application at a recent PAM Bureau meeting. A final decision is expected to formalise the status, according to local media.

Speaker Gafarova welcomed the approval, saying that observer status would open new opportunities for strengthening parliamentary dialogue and expanding international cooperation.

PAM President Giulio Centemero emphasised that the Assembly is also interested in cooperation with Azerbaijan. While noting that Azerbaijan is not located in the Mediterranean region, he highlighted the country’s strategic position and its importance for fostering parliamentary dialogue.

The meeting also addressed potential cooperation between the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean and the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM PN). Discussions included the possibility of granting reciprocal observer status, with both sides noting that parallel considerations within the two organisations could create favourable conditions for collaboration.

Gafarova reaffirmed the Milli Majlis’s interest in expanding its international parliamentary relations and strengthening multilateral engagement.
