Azerbaijan’s parliament launches series of eco-events for “Green World Solidarity Year”

04 October 2024 14:01

The Human Rights Committee of the Milli Majlis will hold a series of events dedicated to the “Green World Solidarity Year” and the upcoming Baku Climate Conference COP29.

These events have already been included in the committee's agenda for the autumn session, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

One of the highlights will be an international conference titled “National Parliaments, Environmental Human Rights, and Sustainable Development – ‘Green Karabakh.’” This conference will see participation from representatives of parliamentary committees on human rights from various countries, particularly Turkic states.

In addition to the conference, discussions with non-governmental organisations and the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources will address critical issues related to environmental human rights. Other events will focus on COP29, environmental and national climate legislation, and the evaluation of international experience, among other pertinent topics.

In a related development, the Milli Majlis is set to consider amendments to the "Tourism" law concerning the prohibition of certain activities in tourist and recreational zones. These amendments were discussed during today's meeting of the Milli Majlis Committee on Labour and Social Policy.

Specifically, the proposed legislation seeks to ban activities associated with the chemical industry, metallurgy, nuclear energy, and the operation of large industrial enterprises and technological equipment manufacturing.

Furthermore, it aims to prohibit waste disposal and recycling facilities, including the establishment of installations and landfills for these purposes.

In terms of activities listed in the appendix to the "Environmental Impact Assessment" law, the proposed amendments stipulate that if there is no document for environmental impact assessment and a state ecological examination of this document, such activities will also be prohibited. Following these discussions, parliamentarians recommended the bill for consideration at a plenary session of the Milli Majlis.
