Azerbaijan’s parliament moves to strengthen law on "Defence" with new amendments

Azerbaijan’s parliament is advancing efforts to bolster national security by proposing key amendments to the law on "Defence." 

Territorial defence in Azerbaijan is defined as a comprehensive set of nationwide military and special measures aimed at protecting and securing the country’s territory, including its state borders, Caliber.Az reports via local media. 

This definition is part of a draft amendment to the law on "Defence", slated for discussion at the upcoming session of the Azerbaijani parliament on June 21.

The proposed legislation seeks to refine and enhance the existing framework governing territorial defence. It follows an in-depth analysis of the outcomes of the 44-day second Karabakh war and subsequent anti-terrorist operations, which underscored the urgent need to reassess and bolster Azerbaijan’s territorial defence capabilities.

Key provisions in the draft law propose that the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan undertake territorial defence in close cooperation with state agencies, local self-government bodies, and legal entities. The detailed procedures for organising, training, and ensuring the operational readiness of territorial defence forces will be outlined in a specific Regulation on Azerbaijan’s Territorial Defence.
