Azerbaijan’s Parliament urges global recognition of Khojaly Genocide

26 February 2026 17:54

On the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide, Azerbaijan’s parliament, the Milli Majlis, has sent official appeals to heads of interparliamentary friendship groups, chairpersons of parliamentary foreign affairs committees in various countries, and a number of international parliamentary organisations.

As Caliber.Az was informed by the parliament, the appeals state that the mass killing of civilians in the town of Khojaly has entered history as one of the gravest and most horrific crimes against humanity committed in the twentieth century. The documents emphasise that the Khojaly genocide constitutes a serious violation of human rights and international humanitarian law, as well as of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, the Convention against Torture, and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

The appeals underline Azerbaijan’s continued diplomatic efforts to secure international recognition of the Khojaly genocide and to ensure accountability for those responsible.

“Given the power of international cooperation in general and interparliamentary dialogue in particular, Azerbaijan continues its efforts to ensure that the Khojaly genocide is recognised at the international level and that those responsible for it are brought to justice. The commemorative ceremonies are not only a tribute to the victims of the Khojaly genocide, but also a call to prevent similar crimes against humanity in the future,” the appeals state.
