Azerbaijan secures seat on UN-Habitat Executive Board, boosting global urban leadership
At the session of the UN Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat) Assembly held in Nairobi, Kenya, Azerbaijan was elected for the first time as a member of the UN-Habitat Executive Board.
The UN-Habitat Executive Board, comprising 36 member states, serves as the principal decision-making body responsible for guiding the strategic direction of the organization, Caliber.Az reports, citing Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry.
Azerbaijan’s newly acquired seat on the Council covers the period from 2025 through 2029, marking a significant step forward in its international cooperation on sustainable urban development.
In recent years, Azerbaijan has demonstrated a dynamic partnership with UN-Habitat, underscoring its commitment to advancing sustainable settlement practices. Notably, Azerbaijan hosted the World Habitat Day (WHD23) in 2023, an event that highlighted its dedication to promoting innovative urban solutions.
Looking ahead, Azerbaijan is set to further cement its role in the global urban agenda by hosting the 13th session of the UN World Urban Forum (WUF13), scheduled to take place on May 17 -22, 2026. This prestigious forum will bring together policymakers, experts, and stakeholders worldwide to discuss challenges and opportunities in sustainable urbanisation.
