Azerbaijan sees itself as part of the Global South, says presidential aide
Azerbaijan considers itself part of the Global South and fully understands the challenges faced by countries in the region, Hikmet Hajiyev, Azerbaijani presidential aide, has stated.
During the General Assembly of the Global South NGO Platform, he said Azerbaijan geographically, historically, culturally and even by its destiny, belongs to the Global South, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
Hajiyev noted that Global South states are facing new threats, including digital inequality and the consequences of climate change.
According to him, digital transformation is widening the gap between the Global South and the Global North, creating additional obstacles to sustainable development.
He called on Global South countries to strengthen solidarity.
“Through solidarity and joint work, we can ensure that our just voice is heard much louder on the global stage,” Hajiyev emphasised.
He added that Azerbaijan supports cooperation with the Global North and other regions of the world, but said such engagement must be based on principles of fairness and equality.
The presidential aide also stressed that Azerbaijan remains a consistent supporter of multilateral cooperation.
“However, unfortunately, we are witnessing a paralysis of multilateral institutions and mechanisms,” he said, expressing confidence that Global South countries will continue to contribute to strengthening international institutions.
