Azerbaijan, UAE emphasise expanding cooperation at parliamentary level photo

Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (Parliament), Sahiba Gafarova, met with Saqr Ghobash, Chairman of the Federal National Council of the United Arab Emirates, during her working visit to the UAE.

Milli Majlis press service told Caliber.Az that Ghobash warmly welcomed the Azerbaijani parliament speaker and expressed gratitude for her visit, as well as for her participation in the second session of the Women’s Parliamentary Forum of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean.

The meeting highlighted satisfaction with the dynamic and comprehensive development of bilateral relations. It was emphasised that the strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and the UAE — grounded in shared historical, religious, and cultural ties — continues to advance at a high level across all areas. The participants noted that joint efforts and the personal rapport between the leaders of both countries have further strengthened cooperation between Azerbaijan and the UAE, as well as between their peoples, resulting in extensive and successful collaboration in numerous sectors.

Referring to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev being awarded the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity, Gafarova stressed that the Azerbaijani people highly appreciated the recognition of the head of state with such a prestigious honour bearing the name of the UAE’s founding father, the late Sheikh Zayed.

The sides also exchanged views on the current state and future prospects of interparliamentary cooperation. It was noted that the strong relations between the two countries are effectively continuing on the parliamentary level, with contacts and reciprocal visits between the legislative bodies increasing in recent times. Gafarova recalled her official visit to the UAE and Ghobash’s official visit to Azerbaijan last year, emphasising that these visits, along with the signing of a memorandum of understanding on parliamentary cooperation, created new opportunities to further deepen ties. Satisfaction was also expressed with the successful cooperation between the two parliaments within international parliamentary organisations.

For his part, Saqr Ghobash fondly recalled his visit to Azerbaijan and underscored the positive impact of the meetings held during that trip on bilateral relations.

Gafarova also praised the successful organisation of the second session of the Women’s Parliamentary Forum of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean, highlighting the importance of such international events in addressing issues of global concern.

The meeting concluded with an exchange of views on other matters of mutual interest.
