Azerbaijan updates European committee rep on Armenia’s ongoing mine terror
Azerbaijani Justice Minister Fikrat Mammadov has informed Vice-President of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture Therese Rytter about Armenia’s ongoing mine terror.
Appreciation for the visit, which marked the 20th anniversary of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the European committee, was expressed at the meeting held in Baku, the ministry told Report.
While noting the development of cooperation with Azerbaijan, Rytter expressed gratification with the work carried out to improve the penitentiary system in line with the recommendations of the committee. The official highly appreciated the effective interaction with the Justice Ministry.
The vice-president was updated about the extensive repair and rehabilitation work done on Azerbaijan's territory liberated as a reuslt of the second Karabakh war in 2020.
It was stressed that the Azerbaijani regions were totally wrecked and mined during the occupation and even after the war, which is one of the greatest barriers to restoration and the return of Azerbaijani inhabitants to their ancestral homeland.
It was emphasized that 46 individuals (mostly civilians) had died as a result of mine explosions, while 276 people have suffered serious injuries.
