Azerbaijani chess player wins Shusha Chess Tournament 2022
Azerbaijani chess player Shahriyar Mammadyarov, who won the Shusha Chess Tournament 2022, has devoted his victory to the memory of martyrs.
The 37-year-old grandmaster made these remarks at the closing ceremony of the competitions on September 25, Report informs.
"It is a great honour for me to win the first chess competition in Shusha. The victory was not easy for me. The tournament was organised at the highest level. Each of the tournament participants can confirm my words," Mammadyarov said.
He also said that there are martyrs among his relatives who died for the liberation of Shusha city.
"One of them was my close friend while the other was a relative. They died here in Shusha on November 7, 2020. May the souls of all our martyrs rest in peace," Mammadyarov added.
