Azerbaijani deputies to observe parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan

22 October 2024 15:32

A group of deputies from the Azerbaijani Parliament will visit Tashkent to observe the parliamentary elections in Uzbekistan on October 27.

According to a report from the Azerbaijani Parliament, the delegation will include Ahliman Amiraslanov, Chairman of Parliament’s Health Committee, Agalar Valiyev representing the TurkPA, Sabina Salmanova from the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly, and deputies Gaya Mammadov and Azay Guliyev from the OSCE PA, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

The elections in Uzbekistan represent a pivotal point in the nation's democratic progress, as the country adopts a new mixed electoral system in line with recent constitutional and electoral reforms.

Special Co-ordinator Guliyev stated, "These elections mark a significant moment in Uzbekistan’s democratic development. With the introduction of a new mixed electoral system, following constitutional and electoral reforms, Uzbekistan is navigating substantial changes. Our mission is to ensure that these elections not only reflect the legal framework but also embody the spirit of democratic values."

Observers are tasked with providing an objective and thorough evaluation to guarantee the transparency and fairness of the electoral process.

Guliyev added, "As observers, our role is to provide a fair and detailed assessment to ensure the transparency and fairness of the electoral process. We are here to witness this process with impartiality and respect for the will of the Uzbek people."

Notably, the Azerbaijani officials will assess the level of preparedness for the elections to the Legislative Chamber of Uzbekistan's Oliy Majlis, review conditions at several polling stations, and monitor voter activity as well as the vote counting process on election day.

The delegation's visit to Uzbekistan is scheduled to conclude on October 29.

The elections will be assessed against democratic commitments contained in the OSCE’s 1990 Copenhagen Document. The preliminary findings and conclusions for the elections will be presented at a press conference in Tashkent on October 28.
