Azerbaijani envoy: Zangezur Corridor key element of regional peace efforts

28 February 2026 12:08

The Zangezur Corridor should be considered within the broader framework of reopening regional communications, Kamil Khasiyev, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan to Serbia, said during a round table in Belgrade titled “Prospects for Peace, Cooperation, and Security: Azerbaijan and Armenia after the Washington Summit,” local media reported.

The diplomat emphasised that the corridor, which is expected to connect Azerbaijan’s mainland with Nakhchivan through Armenian territory, has consistently held strategic importance in the context of peace initiatives.

“For three decades, this region of Azerbaijan has been effectively under blockade. During the historic summit in Washington, an agreement was reached to create the Trump Route (TRIPP) to address this issue. The idea is to provide freight and passenger transportation in both directions. However, this corridor should be viewed in a broader context—in the context of opening up regional communications,” he said.

Khasiyev noted that the Zangezur Corridor could also become one of the routes of the Middle Corridor, linking China and the Far East with Europe via Central Asia, the South Caucasus, and the Black Sea.

“This, in turn, will enable land freight transport to Europe and back through the territory of brotherly Türkiye, using its developed rail and road transport networks, and will bring significant benefits to both countries in the region,” the ambassador stated.

He also highlighted the large-scale restoration and reconstruction work carried out by Azerbaijan in the liberated territories over the past five years.

“In order to ensure the return of hundreds of thousands of former internally displaced persons to their native cities and villages, new roads, airports, power plants, schools, and public buildings have been built. All these reconstruction projects are based on an environmentally friendly, ‘green’ energy concept. In addition, Azerbaijan is implementing a number of major projects aimed at increasing green energy production through the construction of wind and solar power plants in various regions of the country,” Khasiyev concluded.
