Azerbaijani FM: Authorities maintain constant contact with citizens in Iran

20 January 2026 11:31

The Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran and the Consulate General in Tabriz are in constant contact with Azerbaijani citizens remaining in Iran, Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov told local media.

According to Bayramov, this engagement is ongoing. He emphasised that Azerbaijani citizens can reach out to the embassy and consulate general if they encounter any difficulties, Caliber.Az reports.

"There are no serious problems; the embassy and consulate general are working diligently in this area," he added.

The comments come amid nearly three weeks of massive protests across Iran, which many observers describe as the largest in the past decade. The unrest initially erupted following a sharp decline in the value of the national currency but has since evolved into broader political demonstrations calling for the government’s ouster.

Several foreign embassies have advised their citizens to leave the country due to safety concerns. Reports suggest that the government’s crackdown on protesters has resulted in extremely high casualties.

Medical officials in Iran estimate the death toll at a minimum of 12,000, potentially reaching as high as 20,000, while Iran International has reported 12,000 deaths. Thousands of protesters have also been detained, though verified numbers remain difficult to confirm amid ongoing internet blackouts and restrictions on information.
