Azerbaijani FM congratulates Turkish FM, president over reelection
Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov conveyed his congratulations to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the occasion of his reelection and to his counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu on the occasion of the "Republican Union" winning the majority of votes in parliamentary elections.
He expressed the congratulations on a telephone call with Cavusoglu on May 28, Caliber.Az reports per the Foreign Ministry.
During the call, the sides expressed confidence in further strengthening the strategic alliance between Azerbaijan and Türkiye and expanding comprehensive ties in terms of bilateral and regional cooperation.
Minister Cavusoglu expressed gratitude for the attention and congratulations.
Furthermore, Bayramov expressed confidence in further strengthening the Azerbaijani-Turkish strategic alliance.
"I sincerely congratulate you on the tremendous victory won by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the Republican Union in the next elections in brotherly Türkiye,” he wrote on Twitter.
Erdogan's reelection was confirmed by Ahmet Yener, the chairman of the country's Supreme Election Council (YSK), on the May 28 evening.
Speaking to reporters in Ankara, Yener said Erdogan won Türkiye's presidency over opposition challenger Kemal Kilicdaroglu in the second-round runoff vote.
According to unofficial results, the Turkish incumbent won the race with 52.14 per cent, while Kilicdaroglu got 47.86 per cent of the vote, he said. He added that 99.43 per cent of the ballot boxes have been opened so far.
In the first round of the election on May 14, no candidate got the 50 per cent needed for an outright victory, triggering the presidential runoff, though Erdogan took the lead with 49.52 per cent. Parliamentary elections were also held that day, with Erdogan's electoral alliance winning a majority of seats.
