01 May 2026 12:08

On 1 May, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Jeyhun Bayramov received Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), who is on a visit to Azerbaijan.

The sides underlined the long-term and trust-based nature of cooperation between Azerbaijan and the ICRC, stressing the importance of maintaining regular contacts, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Foreign Ministry.

“Cooperation between Azerbaijan and the International Committee of the Red Cross has a long-term and trust-based nature, and the importance of maintaining regular contacts between the parties was noted,” the ministry said.

The meeting focused on the humanitarian activities carried out by the ICRC in the region, with emphasis on Azerbaijan’s support for these efforts.

Bayramov highlighted Azerbaijan’s commitment to humanitarian principles amid regional tensions and military operations, noting that the country has consistently acted in line with international obligations.

Bayramov stated that “in the context of regional tensions and military operations, Azerbaijan has always remained committed to humanitarian principles,” adding that humanitarian assistance had been provided to Iran during periods of ongoing military operations.

The discussions also addressed the impact of modern armed conflicts on civilians. It was stressed that such conflicts “primarily have severe consequences for the civilian population,” underlining the need for increased international efforts in this direction.

In this context, the minister reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s commitment to international law and international humanitarian law, emphasising its consistent adherence to these principles.

The meeting further reviewed post-conflict developments and efforts to promote peace and stability in the region. Bayramov informed the ICRC President about ongoing steps to advance the peace agenda between Azerbaijan and Armenia and to strengthen mutual trust.
