Azerbaijani FM: Removing two key obstacles paves way for peace deal with Armenia

12 April 2025 14:31

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has stated that eliminating two major hurdles — the dismantling of the OSCE Minsk Group and constitutional amendments in Armenia — could clear the path toward a historic peace agreement between Baku and Yerevan.

He made the remarks at a panel discussion titled “Challenges and Opportunities for Regional Cooperation in the South Caucasus” during the Antalya Diplomatic Forum, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

“We believe that after these necessary steps, there will be no additional obstacles on the way to finalizing and signing the agreement on peace and establishing interstate relations between the two countries,” the minister said.

Bayramov emphasized that the initiative to reopen regional transport and communication links had come from Azerbaijan, not Armenia. “The proposal to open communications was put forward by Azerbaijan, not the Armenian side,” he reiterated.

The panel featured a high-level exchange of views with the participation of Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Georgian counterpart Maka Botchorishvili. Moderated by Nigar Göksel, Türkiye/Cyprus Director of the International Crisis Group, and TRT World journalist Auskar Surbakti, the discussion delved into critical regional dynamics and aspirations for lasting peace and cooperation in the South Caucasus.

Key themes included the fragile yet progressing normalization process between Azerbaijan and Armenia, seen as a linchpin for regional stability. The panel also addressed efforts to normalize relations between Türkiye and Armenia, which are considered crucial for fostering broader reconciliation and facilitating cross-border economic integration.

Speakers highlighted the urgency of promoting sustainable development and inclusive economic growth, emphasizing that pragmatic regional cooperation must take precedence over divisive political agendas. There was a shared consensus that the South Caucasus can unlock its full potential only through closer collaboration and mutual trust.

The Antalya Diplomatic Forum, a platform for global and regional dialogue, is set to continue through April 13.
