Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry honours memory of Patriotic War martyrs

27 September 2023 09:22

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has shared a post on X on the occasion of September 27, Remembrance Day.

"September 27, the date which marks the beginning of the 44-day Patriotic War that put a stop to 30-year occupation, is the Day of Remembrance of our sons and daughters who became a symbol of heroism and patriotism," the ministry said in a post, Caliber.Az reports.

"With deep respect and gratitude we remember our Martyrs, whose bright memory will forever live in our hearts," the post says.

In the same vein, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov also shared a post on his X social media account commemorating the memory of Azerbaijani servicemen who died during the Second Garabagh War.

“On the third anniversary of the beginning of the 44-day Patriotic War, Remembrance Day - September 27, we with deep respect honour the memory of our martyred heroes, who, at the cost of their lives and blood, hoisted our flag in the territories liberated from occupation and who are the source of our pride,” - the publication says.

On September 27, Azerbaijan marks Remembrance Day, honouring the memories of the heroes who lost their lives fighting in the Second Garabagh War (2020), also known as the “Patriotic War.”

The war, which lasted 44 days in 2020, saw Azerbaijani forces liberate the lands from nearly three decades of illegal occupation by Armenia.

Armenia and Azerbaijan had been in an armed conflict over Azerbaijan's Garabagh (Garabagh) region since the early 1990s when Armenia launched full-blown military aggression against Azerbaijan. The bloody war lasted until a ceasefire in 1994 and saw Armenia occupying 20 per cent of Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized territories. Over 30,000 Azerbaijanis were killed, and one million were expelled from those lands in a brutal ethnic cleansing policy conducted by Armenia.

Armenian authorities failed to fulfill the UN Security Council's four resolutions demanding the immediate complete and unconditional withdrawal of the occupying forces from the Azerbaijani lands and the return of internally displaced Azerbaijanis to their native lands. The lack of international pressure on Armenia and three decades of ineffective mediation by the OSCE Minsk Group resulted in a dead-end in fetching a lasting solution to the conflict.
