Azerbaijani, Iranian top officials discuss political relations in Baku

01 April 2025 15:36

Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev has met with Adviser to the President of Iran on Political Affairs Mehdi Sanaei in Baku.

“During the meeting, we had a broad exchange of views on bilateral political relations between Azerbaijan and Iran in line with the instructions set by the presidents of the two countries,” Hajiyev posted on X, per Caliber.Az.

In addition, Hikmet Hajiyev and Mehdi Sanaei discussed international and regional issues of mutual interest.

In February 2025, Hikmet Hajiyev visited Tehran for a series of high-level meetings aimed at enhancing bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Iran.

During his visit, Hajiyev met with Ali Akbar Ahmadian, the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council. Their discussions focused on strengthening political and economic cooperation, addressing regional security issues, and countering external threats to the bilateral ties between the two nations.

Hajiyev also held talks with Mehdi Sanaei, the Political Advisor to the President of Iran. They explored various aspects of their relationship, underscoring the longstanding friendship and mutual commitment to resolving misunderstandings. The discussions included enhancing political and economic ties, as well as promoting people-to-people exchanges to strengthen cultural and diplomatic bonds.

In a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Hajiyev discussed ways to improve mutual relations and cooperation within international and regional platforms, including the 3+3 regional format, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), and the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA). They agreed to continue mutual confidence-building measures and highlighted the significance of regional transport corridors like the Aghband-Nakhchivan and North-South Transport Corridors, which serve the common interests of both countries.

Additionally, Hajiyev visited the newly opened administrative building of the Azerbaijani Embassy in Tehran, where he paid tribute to National Leader Heydar Aliyev by laying flowers at his bust. This visit symbolized a new chapter in Azerbaijan-Iran relations, especially following the embassy's resumption of operations after a tragic terrorist attack in January 2023.
