Azerbaijani, Iraqi FMs discuss COP29's role in bilateral green energy ties

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Migration Badr Abdelati had a telephone conversation on November 21.

During the telephone conversation, the importance of further development of friendly relations based on mutual trust, bilateral and multilateral ties between Azerbaijan and Egypt was emphasized, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Foreign Ministry.

The sides noted the need to improve coordination work within international organisations and multilateral formats.

In addition, Bayramov and Abdelati touched upon the discussions held at the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), the role of this event of global importance in combating climate change.

The parties stated that COP29 opens additional opportunities for Azerbaijani-Egyptian cooperation in the field of green energy. During the telephone conversation, the sides exchanged views on regional issues of mutual interest.

Notably, as part of the COP29 conference which started on November 11, and will run through November 22 at Baku Stadium, Baku aims to reach an agreement on a fair and ambitious New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) related to climate finance. This goal is seen as essential for driving global climate action. 

Currently, Baku hosts 70,000 and 80,000 international guests, including leaders from governments, businesses, and civil society, all working together to find tangible solutions to the record-high global temperatures and extreme weather events that are affecting people worldwide.

COP29 Presidency. led by Mukhtar Babyev, has developed a plan based on two mutually reinforcing pillars to enhance ambition and enable action.to deliver a process that is transparent, impartial and inclusive.

Besides, Azerbaijan is committed to developing its renewable energy potential, which is an important part of the country’s plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 40% by 2050. The country intends to increase renewable power capacity to 30% by 2030 and diversify its existing energy system to become a leader in green energy. Azerbaijan is committed to leading by example and will update its national targets in its next 1.5-aligned Nationally Determined Contribution.
