Azerbaijani MPs defend national sovereignty Amid US pressure, support for Armenia
During a session of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) on October 8, MP Siyavush Novruzov commented on the ongoing influence of the US, stating that attempts to pressure Azerbaijan will not compromise the country’s independent policy.
Novruzov remarked that, for 50 years, the US has been involved in wars worldwide, either directly or indirectly, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
“They have established embassies in various countries, and their strategy is to manage nations through their ambassadors. The bloodshed in Arab countries and elsewhere today can be attributed to the US. Now they have begun to take an interest in the South Caucasus. However, Azerbaijan has always pursued an independent policy and will continue to do so,” Novruzov said.
According to him this is precisely why the US provided assistance first to Nagorno-Karabakh and now directly to Armenia.
“The wishes of US supporters within Azerbaijan, such as Ali Karimli and others, will not come to fruition.”
First Deputy Chairman of the Milli Majlis, Ali Ahmadov, added that previous attempts to impose sanctions on Azerbaijan had failed.
“For example, the 907th amendment, introduced by US against Azerbaijan in the 1990s, did not deter the country. Azerbaijan has strengthened itself and liberated its territories from occupation. If the 907th amendment could not influence Azerbaijan then, no sanctions can sway a strong Azerbaijan that has liberated its lands now.”
MP Mushfig Jafarov in turn, stated that the US had long regarded Azerbaijan as a strategic partner, noting that even NATO and its allies had utilised Azerbaijan as a transit point for military operations in Afghanistan. “However, the hearings and statements in the US over the last four years have dealt a significant blow to the bilateral and multilateral relations between Azerbaijan and the US.”
Jafarov added that the primary aim of the White House's policy towards the South Caucasus is to exert pressure on Azerbaijan and prevent us from taking a leading role in the region.
Ziyafat Asgarov, Deputy Chairman of the Milli Majlis, remarked on a recent statement made by the US Assistant Secretary of State at an OSCE conference, regarding the continuation of aid to "Nagorno-Karabakh". He described these views as a disrespect for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity.
“I declare: there is no concept of ‘Nagorno-Karabakh’; there is only Karabakh. These statements cast a shadow over Azerbaijan-US relations. In letters addressed to the President of Azerbaijan during Energy Week and other events, US officials express interest in establishing peace in the region and the swift signing of a peace agreement. Yet, the policies they pursue reveal their hypocrisy and double standards.”
