Azerbaijani MPs to attend conference on inter-parliamentary cooperation of CIS countries

Members of the Azerbaijani Milli Majlis will attend an international conference on “Role of Interaction between Factions of Political Parties and Blocs in Inter-Parliamentary cooperation of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS)”.

MPs Mikhail Zabelin and Elchin Mirzabayli are scheduled to travel to Moscow, Russia, on November 25 to participate in the event, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

The visit will run until November 28. The conference aims to foster dialogue and cooperation among CIS countries, emphasizing the influence of political parties in enhancing inter-parliamentary relations.

On November 20, an Azerbaijani parliamentary delegation headed by Milli Majlis Speaker Sahiba Gafarova arrived in St. Petersburg on a working visit to participate in the meeting of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly council and the 57th Plenary Session of the CIS IPA.

A meeting of the Council of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly (IPA CIS) was held in St. Petersburg, where Speaker Gafarova participated.

During the meeting, various organizational issues and the agenda were discussed.

Gafarova took the opportunity to express her gratitude to all observer groups, especially while discussing the final conclusions of the CIS IPA mission, which observed Azerbaijan’s extraordinary elections to the Milli Majlis.

She addressed the significant change in the election date, explaining that the shift to September 1 was primarily due to Azerbaijan’s hosting of COP29. "This decision has fully justified itself," Gafarova said, highlighting that the parliamentary elections were an important event in the country's political life, requiring the mobilization of state resources. "It was impossible to organize the elections qualitatively during such a global international event with the participation of more than 70,000 guests from 196 countries, including over 80 presidents, vice presidents, and prime ministers," she added.

During the meeting, both Valentina Matvienko, Chairperson of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of Russia, and Natalia Kochanova, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, congratulated the Azerbaijani people and President Ilham Aliyev on the successful organization of COP29.
