Azerbaijani official accuses Armenia of violating international law by preventing return of refugees
Armenia is in serious violation of international law by preventing the return of Western Azerbaijanis to their native lands, said Samir Bejanov, Head of the International Security Department at Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry.
Bejanov made this statement during parliamentary hearings on the topic "Safe and Dignified Return to Western Azerbaijan," Caliber.Az reports via local media.
He emphasized that international documents and refugee laws affirm the right of Western Azerbaijanis to return to their homeland.
"International legal acts enshrine the right of refugees not only to return to their state but also to the territories where they once lived. Armenia, on whose territory the Western Azerbaijanis lived, is obligated to ensure this right," he stated.
