Azerbaijani Parliament convenes session on Washington agreements Insidious plans masterfully prevented, Speaker on US-brokered peace deal / UPDATED

Speaker of the Milli Majlis (Parliament) Sahiba Gafarova hailed the recent diplomatic developments in Washington as a major turning point for regional peace and stability, stating that "insidious plans" aimed at destabilizing Azerbaijan have been successfully thwarted through decisive leadership and strategic diplomacy.

Speaking at a special parliamentary session devoted to the recent Washington agreements, Gafarova underlined the critical role of US President Donald Trump in facilitating progress between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Caliber.Az reports per local media.

She underscored that the advancement of US-Azerbaijani relations remains a strategic priority of the highest importance.

According to the Speaker, Azerbaijan has successfully neutralized hostile schemes aimed at undermining the nation's stability. “The insidious plans against our country have been masterfully prevented. The signing of a joint declaration and the initialing of a peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington, mediated by Donald Trump, mark the triumph of truth and justice,” Gafarova asserted, framing the developments as a decisive victory for diplomatic integrity and regional peace.

The Milli Majlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan convened a special session titled "The Washington Agreements: A Triumph of Peaceful Diplomacy and Wise Leadership,” underscoring the historic significance of recent diplomatic breakthroughs between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

The extraordinary session, chaired by Speaker Sahiba Gafarova, commenced with the performance of the national anthem of Azerbaijan. The session was convened following an official appeal from MPs in accordance with Part 2 of Article 88 of the Azerbaijani Constitution, which authorizes the summoning of special parliamentary sittings under exceptional circumstances, Caliber.Az reports via local media.      

In her opening remarks, Speaker Gafarova described the Washington agreements, signed during President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to the United States on August 8, as a turning point not only for Azerbaijan but for the broader South Caucasus region.

“These agreements represent a historic diplomatic achievement,” Gafarova declared. “They reflect the triumph of strategic foresight, the pursuit of peace, and the continuation of the political legacy of national leader Heydar Aliyev.”

Highlighting regional implications, Gafarova placed particular emphasis on the strategic significance of the Zangezur Corridor. “The Zangezur Corridor is redrawing the transport map of Eurasia. It opens new economic and geopolitical opportunities not just for Azerbaijan, but for the entire region,” she said, adding that its development will further strengthen connectivity and economic integration across continents.

Speaker Gafarova also welcomed the international community’s positive response to the agreements, noting that global stakeholders have recognized the accords as a vital step toward lasting peace and stability in the region.

Gafarova also addressed the formal cessation of the OSCE Minsk Group’s activities as of 1 September, asserting that this development would positively impact the ongoing peace process in the region.

She described the agreements reached between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington on August 8 as historic, marking a pivotal moment in the diplomatic landscape of the South Caucasus.

“The accords concluded during President Ilham Aliyev’s visit to Washington hold profound historical significance—not only for Azerbaijan, but for the region as a whole,” Gafarova stated. “They have reshaped not only the trajectory of US-Azerbaijani relations and the regional peace agenda, but also broader geopolitical dynamics throughout the South Caucasus.”

Gafarova further emphasized that these landmark agreements represent a continuation of the strategic political vision laid out by national leader Heydar Aliyev, and can rightly be regarded as one of the most significant achievements of Azerbaijan’s contemporary diplomatic efforts.
