Azerbaijani parliament speaker congratulates Türkiye on Victory Day
Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis, extended heartfelt congratulations to the people and government of Türkiye on the occasion of Victory Day, celebrating the historic triumph of the Turkish army in the War of Independence.
In a statement shared on her social media, quoted by Caliber.Az, Gafarova said, “Victory in the War of Independence holds a distinguished place in the history of Turkish statehood, reflecting the unity and indomitable spirit of the brotherly Turkish people.”
She also wished Türkiye peace, prosperity, and continued well-being on this important national holiday.
The Victory Day commemorations began on August 29 in Baku with a ceremony at the Memorial to Turkish Soldiers, attended by Turkish Ambassador Birol Akgün, embassy staff, and officials from both Azerbaijan and Türkiye. During the event, the participants laid a wreath at the memorial, followed by the playing of the national anthems of both countries.
The delegation also visited Martyrs’ Alley and the Memorial to Turkish Soldiers, where they paid tribute to the fallen by laying additional wreaths and flowers.
Victory Day, celebrated annually on August 30, marks the decisive victory of the Turkish army under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk at the Battle of Dumlupınar in 1922. The triumph ended the Greek occupation of Anatolia, concluded the Great Offensive, and became a pivotal moment in Turkish history, symbolising the determination and resilience of the Turkish people.
