Azerbaijani parliament speaker discusses COP29 with counterparts from Belarus, Ethiopia

12 July 2024 12:24

Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament's sixth convocation Sahiba Gafarova has held discussions with Natalia Kochanova, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of Belarus, and Agengew Teshager, Chairman of the Ethiopian Federation Council, during her working visit to St. Petersburg, Russia.

The meetings focused on exploring cooperation between their respective countries in various sectors, Caliber.Az reports citing the local media.

The discussions also covered the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), scheduled to take place in Baku in November 2024. Gafarova provided details about the parliamentary conference that the Azerbaijani Parliament is organising in collaboration with the Inter-Parliamentary Union as part of COP29.

Baku will host the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).

A group of Eastern European countries has chosen Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, to host COP29 climate talks next year.

Earlier, Bulgaria withdrew its candidacy to host the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change in favour of Azerbaijan.

Moreover, Baku and Yerevan agreed to support each other at some international venues. In a joint statement, Armenia said it would support Azerbaijan's bid to host the COP29 summit.

The conference is being held in rotation by five UN regional groups, and Eastern Europe will take part next year.
