Speaker of Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (parliament), Sahiba Gafarova, met with Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi during her official visit, with discussions centring on the opening of Azerbaijan’s embassy in Oman and strengthening bilateral ties.
During the meeting, Minister Busaidi highlighted the positive impact of parliamentary relations on the ties between our countries and peoples during the meeting, underscoring the particular importance of the visit by the Speaker of the Milli Majlis in this context, Caliber.Az reports via Milli Majlis.
He noted the substantial cooperation potential that exists between Azerbaijan and Oman in political, economic, tourism, and business spheres, emphasising that parliaments are well-positioned to play a crucial role in expanding collaboration across these areas.
The Minister drew attention to Azerbaijan’s strategic geographic location, which provides extensive logistical and transport opportunities, while Oman’s position at the intersection of major international transport routes further supports the continued deepening of bilateral cooperation.
Speaker Sahiba Gafarova, in turn, remarked that Azerbaijan-Oman relations are built on a solid foundation, with significant prospects for future development. She highlighted the ongoing cooperation between the two countries in international organisations and praised Oman’s consistent support for Azerbaijan in matters related to its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
The meeting also addressed the recent opening of the Azerbaijani embassy in Oman, which is seen as a step toward elevating bilateral relations to a higher level. The participants emphasised the importance of regular contact between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Economy of both countries to strengthen collaboration.
Speaker Gafarova expressed deep appreciation for the work done through inter-parliamentary cooperation, noting the continuous efforts to maintain mutual support via parliamentary diplomacy. She pointed out that inter-parliamentary collaboration has grown substantially, with meetings held during various visits and events following the inaugural meeting of the two countries’ Speakers in January 2023.
The parties agreed that ongoing contacts between legislative and governmental bodies contribute significantly to reinforcing the bonds between Azerbaijan and Oman.
As Speaker Gafarova emphasised, both countries prioritise peace, stability, and cooperation, making the advancement of their bilateral relationship both natural and essential.
Humanitarian cooperation was also discussed, with particular reference to the visit of Vice President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Leyla Aliyeva to Oman, which provided an opportunity to explore cultural ties and humanitarian collaboration.
The conversation further included an exchange of views on the current regional situation. Speaker Gafarova noted that following the de-occupation of Azerbaijani territories, a peace process was initiated at Azerbaijan’s initiative, and significant progress has been achieved, especially following the Washington Summit, in normalising relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
She added that ongoing efforts to establish new regional transport connections will further enhance stability and cooperation in the region.
