Azerbaijani speaker details landmark outcomes of COP29 climate talks
Azerbaijan successfully strengthened ties between the Global South and the Global North through last November’s COP29, one of the most effective Conferences of the Parties, according to Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the Milli Majlis (Parliament).
The event, held under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, ensured that the voices of developing countries were heard in global climate discussions, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
Speaking on the topic of “Strengthening disaster resilience and responses” at the 11th G20 Speakers’ Summit, Gafarova outlined the main achievements of COP29, formally recognised by the United Nations as the “Baku Climate Unity (BaCU) Pact.”
She highlighted several key outcomes, including the adoption of a new collective quantified goal, known as the Baku Finance Goal; the full operationalisation of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, covering international carbon markets; measures to ensure the full functioning of the Loss and Damage Fund; the approval of the Baku Adaptation Roadmap; and the establishment of the Baku High-Level Adaptation Dialogue.
Gafarova also noted that the Milli Majlis, in cooperation with the Inter-Parliamentary Union, held a parliamentary meeting on the sidelines of COP29 aimed at uniting legislative efforts to tackle climate change.
