04 December 2025 19:01

Azerbaijan’s Minister of Defence Colonel General Zakir Hasanov and the United Kingdom’s Minister of State for Defence Lord Vernon Coaker held talks in Baku on December 4, focusing on strengthening bilateral military cooperation, expanding defence-technical collaboration, and deepening military-education partnerships.

The discussions addressed the current state of defence ties and outlined prospects for further cooperation, including increased exchanges, training programs, and institutional coordination, Caliber.Az reports per Defence Ministry

Lord Coaker’s delegation began its visit by laying wreaths at the Martyrs’ Alley, paying tribute to Azerbaijani service members who lost their lives in defence of the country.

During the meeting, Minister Hasanov highlighted the growing importance of Azerbaijan-UK defence relations and noted the positive impact of the United Kingdom’s establishment of a Defence Attaché Office in Baku last year.

Lord Coaker expressed gratitude for the warm reception and reaffirmed the UK’s interest in broadening defence collaboration, emphasising the value of regular bilateral visits and experience-sharing initiatives.

The talks were attended by Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Elin Suleymanov, and the UK Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Fergus Auld, along with senior defence officials from both sides.

As part of the visit, the UK delegation also participated in the graduation ceremony for the Instructor Training Course involving young Azerbaijani officers. Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Defence and Director General Agil Gurbanov thanked the UK side for its support in delivering the program. Certificates were presented to the graduates by Gurbanov, National Defence University Rector Major General Gunduz Abdulov, and representatives of the UK delegation.
