Azerbaijani, Uzbek parliamentary leaders review partnership progress, climate challenges in COP29-based dialogue
Speaker of Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis (Parliament), Sahiba Gafarova, met with Speaker of the Senate of Uzbekistan's Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbaeva, who is visiting Azerbaijan to participate in a Parliamentary meeting organized jointly by the Azerbaijani Parliament and the Inter-Parliamentary Union as part of COP29 in Baku.
During their meeting, Gafarova thanked Narbaeva for attending the significant event in Azerbaijan and for her insightful speech, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
The leaders discussed the undeniable importance of global cooperation in addressing the challenges posed by climate change and emphasized the key role parliaments play in this regard.
During the meeting, Gafarova highlighted the high level of relations between Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
She noted the important role of mutual presidential visits and negotiations in strengthening bilateral ties. The signing of agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation and deepening the strategic partnership between the two countries was also underscored.
Gafarova expressed satisfaction with the participation of Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in COP29 during his visit to Azerbaijan, as well as his virtual participation in the opening ceremony of a sewing factory in Khankendi on November 13. This followed a meeting between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his Uzbek counterpart, Mirziyoyev.
The Azerbaijani Speaker praised the support provided by Uzbekistan in the construction of a school in Fuzuli and the establishment of the Khankendi factory, which will create thousands of jobs in a short period—a testament to the brotherly relations between the two nations.
She also acknowledged the successful development of cooperation between the legislative bodies of Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, noting the contribution of parliamentary friendship groups in both countries in strengthening bilateral relations. She highlighted the effective cooperation of their parliamentarians in international parliamentary organizations.
For her part, Narbaeva expressed gratitude for the meeting and the invitation to such a significant event. She congratulated Azerbaijan on hosting COP29 at such a high level and stressed the importance of the issues discussed at the event for the future of the world.
The meeting also highlighted the role of parliaments in advancing relations between Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan, with a focus on the importance of reciprocal delegation visits.
Narbaeva fondly recalled her previous meetings with Gafarova, noting the positive impact these encounters have had in strengthening cooperation between the legislative bodies of both countries.
The leaders also exchanged views on matters of mutual interest.
