Bahamas PM joins world leaders in Azerbaijan for COP29 climate summit
On November 9, Prime Minister Philip Davis of the Bahamas arrived in Azerbaijan to attend the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29).
Upon his arrival at Heydar Aliyev International Airport, the Prime Minister was warmly welcomed by Azerbaijan's Minister of Science and Education, Emin Amrullayev, along with other government officials, Caliber.Az reports.
Earlier this day, the President of the Marshall Islands, Hilda Heine, arrived in Azerbaijan for COP29 as well. She was greeted at the airport by Azerbaijan’s Minister of Youth and Sports, Farid Gayibov, and other representatives, with the airport decorated with the national flags of both countries.
Prime Minister Feleti Teo of Tuvalu also arrived in Azerbaijan to participate in the high-level climate conference, receiving a similar welcome from Minister Gayibov and other Azerbaijani officials as part of his official visit.
COP29 will take place on November 11-22 in Baku, bringing together global leaders, policymakers, and environmental experts to address pressing climate issues. The conference is expected to attract around 70,000 to 80,000 international guests, aiming to accelerate action on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and addressing extreme weather events.
A central focus of COP29 will be on financing, as the conference seeks to mobilize the necessary trillions of dollars required for countries to tackle climate change and reduce its impacts. Additionally, nations will present updated national climate action plans under the Paris Agreement, which are due by early 2025, with the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.
