Baku Initiative Group, Bonaire NGOs sign cooperation agreement
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation was inked in Baku, Azerbaijan, between civil society organizations from Bonaire, under Dutch colonial rule, and the Baku Initiative Group (BIG).
The formal signing ceremony in the Azerbaijani capital featured prominent figures from both sides, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
The agreement was signed by Abbas Abbasov, Executive Director of BIG, James Finies, Founder of the Bonaire Movement for Change, and Davika Bissessar, President of the Bonaire Human Rights Organisation.
This partnership is designed to strengthen collaborative efforts in advocating for Bonaire’s self-determination and advancing human rights on the island.
The agreement follows the international conference titled “Bonaire’s pathway from Baku through UN General Assembly to Self-Determination,” which concluded the day before.
During this conference, participants adopted a declaration endorsing Bonaire’s quest for self-determination.
Looking ahead, Bonaire’s delegation plans to present a resolution to the UN Special Committee on Decolonisation (C24) in October. This resolution aims to re-list Bonaire as a Non-Self-Governing Territory, furthering the island's push for increased autonomy.
The conference was jointly organized by the Baku Initiative Group, the Bonaire Human Rights Organization, and the Movement for Change.
