Baku Initiative Group condemns French "atrocities" against Kanaks in New Caledonia
The Baku Initiative Group (BIG) has accused French authorities of committing atrocities against the Kanak population in New Caledonia, following the violent suppression of peaceful protests in 2024.
Abbas Abbasov, Executive Director of BIG, condemned the actions of French forces, which he said resulted in the deaths of 13 civilians and injuries to over 200 others, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
“These acts of violence against innocent people highlight the urgent need for global solidarity to end colonialism,” Abbasov said at the International Front for Decolonization congress in New Caledonia.
The congress, held in the heart of New Caledonia, was described as symbolically significant by Abbasov, who praised Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev for his stance on the issue. “President Aliyev has openly condemned the crimes against the Kanak people and voiced strong support for decolonized regions,” he stated.
Abbasov also highlighted the efforts of BIG to raise awareness, revealing that the group had written to international organizations to expose the situation. “Thanks to these efforts, the issue has gained significant international attention,” he added.
The Baku Initiative Group further emphasized the importance of addressing human rights violations in colonial regions. “The systemic oppression of these communities requires urgent international support to restore justice and eliminate colonial pressures,” Abbasov noted.
The congress also provided a platform to discuss broader issues of colonialism and neocolonialism. “The International Front for Decolonization serves as a vital platform for dialogue and action. This congress allows us to explore solutions to global challenges stemming from colonialism. I am confident it will strengthen our collective efforts,” Abbasov concluded.
