Baku Initiative Group highlights stepped-up cooperation with Sikh Federation

03 June 2026 10:21

In recent months, the Baku Initiative Group (BIG) and the International Sikh Federation have stepped up cooperation on safeguarding the rights of ethnic minorities, addressing transnational repression attributed to the Indian government, and promoting the international human rights agenda, BIG Executive Director Abbas Abbasov said.

Speaking at the international conference "Amritsar June 1984: Transnational Repression as an Extension of Genocide" in Baku, he noted that over the past five months, two international conferences had been held jointly with the International Sikh Federation, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

These events focused on transnational repression, discrimination against ethnic minorities in India, as well as broader issues of human rights protection and the role of international organisations in securing the rights of indigenous peoples and ethnic minorities.

Abbasov added that, within the framework of joint activities, a report was also presented at the 61st session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.

"I firmly believe that our cooperation with the International Sikh Federation will make a significant contribution to the protection of the rights of ethnic minorities and human rights in general," the executive director emphasised.

He further stated that participants at the current conference would have the opportunity to discuss the role of international law in addressing various forms of transnational repression.
